Friday Flowers

Good morning! As is not unusual, sadly, we’ve had four days of 26°C but today it’s raining, and that’s the forecast for the weekend as well.

Those hot and sunny days have definitely made up for what didn’t go so well this week, though. Apartment viewing: disappointing, so have to keep on searching. New Indian restaurant last night: food good but service more than lacking. Planting out my seedlings: had to sow new seeds for some as for seemingly no reason the ones that had been growing nicely died.

The flowers in today’s picture also were a disappointment: I bought them at last week’s Friday market, but two days later only what you see here was left, everything else had gone to seed.

So the plans for this weekend are: buy new flowers at different stall, plant out what’s left of the seedlings, and come up with something to cook for the food blog. Oh, and hope the weather forecast is lying 😀

Happy Friday!

The last of the rununculi *sigh*. Wish their season were longer but I’ll probably appreciate them even more when they reappear next year.

Since my return from vacation the weather here has been more April-like, with lots of showers, wind and rain, interspersed with a few days of 20°. Let’s hope the weekend will be a sunny one.

Plans for the weekend are still unclear – it’s Mother’s Day here in Germany this Sunday, so there’ll definitely be some family time. I know I’m always telling you that I’ve been doing some decluttering but I often don’t touch stuff that I’m sure I need. Yesterday I received an invitation for an apartment viewing next week, and that was like a kick in the butt because if/when I do find the right apartment, moving will have to be organised quickly with no time to sit down and view each and every piece of clothing, household items, etc and deciding what to do with it, so some serious list making and saying goodbye to things will have to be on the agenda. Fingers crossed for the viewing!

What are your plans for this weekend?

Hello on this sunny but cold spring morning! A bit of a strange weather week here in Southern Germany. Just when we thought our world was in full spring mode, we got summer temps of 25ºC for a few days, which were followed by cold rainy days over the four day Easter weekend. We then got two days of snow storms at the beginning of the week, and although it’s quite cold now at least it is sunny and crisp. Apparently we’re expecting many cloudy days starting this weekend.

I have the most exciting things planned for tomorrow – defrosting the freezer 😂 . Should have done this ages ago because my freezer drawers can hardly be pulled out anymore, but I decided it could wait. Only now it no longer can. While the defrosting happens, I’m hoping to get a few photography things done as well as going through my belongings with a fine tooth comb. I still haven’t found a new apartment, but I want to be prepared when I do, so I really need to think about what I do not want to lug with me in case of moving. It won’t be an easy task because I usually think I need everything I own.

I’ll also be thinning out the seedlings I sowed, which have grown immensely in the past few weeks, so it’ll be a trip to the garden center to get the proper soil for them.

This month I have bought new photography backgrounds/surfaces as well as made some myself, even though I’m not a DIY person. So I’m sure I’ll be experimenting with those. You can see two of my DIY ones in today’s flower pics – they used to be a beer table, I had them sawed in half and sanded, then painted both the top and bottom parts with different chalk paint and clear varnish, so I now have four different coloured backgrounds/surfaces. That’s enough DIY for the rest of the year, though 🙂 .

Hope you’ll all have a pleasant and sunny weekend!

Hello there! With Good Friday being the first of the Easter holidays, I had a late start into the day.

The Friday market was moved to Thursday, and I think I got more food items in than I’ll probably be able to process within the next four days; the family lunches on Easter Sunday and Monday will be at restaurants, so that leaves only today and tomorrow to do some serious cooking.

Except for those lunches I have nothing much planned, I’m just going to enjoy the four days off.

Hope you’re lucky enough to get as much time off at Easter as well.

Happy Friday!

Good morning. These ranunculi are the same that you saw last week in little bottles. Some of them decided to hang their heads, bending right in the middle of the stems, so I shortened them and put them in a vase to give them a second lease on life.

We’ve been having fantastic spring weather this past week with up to 20°C, and I hope that’ll last through the weekend.

A friend and I had planned to visit a nearby city after seeing their ad for some kind of tulip event. Luckily we went online to get details, because it turns out it’ll be a just one big flowerbed – OK, so it’s made up of 1600 tulips, but still we decided not to drive out there for one flowerbed. So I’ll probably be taking it slow this weekend.

The seedlings I planted for my balcony only a week ago are thriving, the cosmea are already 10 cm high. The rest isn’t so bad either, seems only the ramson (wild garlic) doesn’t want to show up. I sowed seeds for 3 varieties of cosmea, 2 of asters, 2 of skabiosa, a poppy variety, and a zinnia. For herbs I’m having coriander, oregano, basil, and the reluctant ramson. Might get some seeds for thyme and mint this weekend.

Hope you’re in a good weather zone and have a nice weekend ahead of you.

Happy Friday!

Friday Flowers

Good morning on this last day of my vacation. Today’s flowers are last week’s purchase, the remainders of which have been shortened and are now sitting in a vase on my coffee table.

I’m happy to say I did everything I had intended to do during this week. The majority of my time  – as planned – was chill time, sleeping in, enjoying my time off.

I sowed flower & herb seeds for the balcony, I went to the salts & oils class (fun, interesting, good starting point if you want to make homemade gifts but all in all a bit overpriced), together with a friend I visited Zavelstein in the Black Forest, which is known for its wild crocus blossom (unfortunately the first blossom had already come and gone, and due to the rain a lot of the crocuses were damaged but we still had a great time), I did my tax return, and today I’m going to meet the family at the ice cream parlour and visit the market. Tomorrow I’ll visit the Bread & Rose Market with a friend, where regional female entrepreneurs sell homemade and organic goods.

If you live in London, I hope you’re OK after the happenings on Wednesday, and if you live in the US, I hope you’ll still have health insurance after tonight – a completely incomprehensible concept to me as a German not to be able to have a fundumental right to affordable health insurance. Then again, a lot of fundamental rights seem to be going down the drain these days…

On that insightful note 😀 – have a good weekend!

Good morning! Today’s flower pic is more like a blank canvas, I know… Maybe I chose it because the next week will be like a blank canvas for me; after having had to surrender my vacation week in January to sickness, I have next week off and hope to make use of this “blank canvas”.

Except for an evening class named “Salts & Oils” and meeting a friend I have no big plans for next week. Hopefully I’ll get to go to the garden center to buy potting compost so I can finally sow this year’s flower seeds for the balcony.

At the moment I also view this photography thing as a bit of a blank canvas because while the previous months my goal was just to go out and take pictures again I actually have no clue at the moment what I want to take pictures of. I realised the other day that walking around aimlessly hoping to find some little details along the way was not how I wanted to operate.

Let’s hope that after the next week my canvas will at least be filled with some new ideas and inspiration.

Wishing you an inspired weekend, everyone! Happy Friday!

Good morning. Contrary to the two weeks of continuous rain my weather app predicted earlier this week, we’re having a sunny day so far.

Last week I mentioned a bread baking session and taking my bread to the baking house to be baked in the wood-burning oven; that didn’t turn out as well as expected, and I have to say the version I did last month in my oven at home was way better. So I guess it’s not worth driving my bread around to be baked again.

The other part of our plan turned out exceptionally well, though. My friend had packed some of her Halloween decorations, and we found a great tree by a little pond, surrounded by weeping willows, where we set up the props. We quickly had a winner, and the invitations are currently being printed.

This weekend I’m invited to a friend’s birthday, and I’d also like to do some recipe experimenting. Some ideas have been on my kitchen chalk board for well over a year, and I think it’s time to give them a go.

Happy Friday!

Good morning! A very cold morning here today, we’re back to 1ºC but we’ve been promised a 15ºC weekend, which is great to hear, but still those jumps in temperature are hard to adapt to sometimes (or is it just age, hehe…).

As I mentioned in my monthly overview earlier this week, I did a major spring clean in the kitchen last weekend; I’m still going through stuff that I don’t think I want to keep but luckily I have a friend who’s currently looking for items to “modify” for Halloween decorations. If you think it’s too early for that – we’ve been saying the other day that “after the party is before the party” so really it’s better to get things out of the way and have them ready in storage once the day comes.

Speaking of Halloween, we’ll be going on a little outing tomorrow and taking some accessories with us to start taking pictures for this year’s invitations. Before we do that, we’ll both be preparing bread dough tonight and take our respective loaves to the baking house we visited last year; our breads will be baking in the wood-burning oven while we go and have breakfast and do our Halloween thing. I’m looking forward to it, especially as my friend will be bringing her 7 month old little dog along, so anything could happen…

What are your plans for the weekend?

Hello & Happy Friday! We’ve had heavy storms here all last night that sounded really terrible; luckily this morning we’re only having a slight wind, and half the sky looks clear and blue.

Instead of my intentions to take pictures last week, I didn’t do much except go to the garden center, where I got above flowers. The garden center looked like spring had exploded in there, and it made me want to buy tons of stuff. I resisted and just bought flowers. I’m really looking forward to plant seeds for the balcony, though.

There’s nothing on the agenda for this weekend except maybe some recipe testing. Apart from that I’m planning on relaxing, reading, and drinking lots of coffee.

Hope you all have nice plans, be it for something exciting, adventurous, or just relaxing!

Hello again. I don’t have much to tell you today, which I guess is a good thing after all the negative stuff that’s been flying around me these past weeks. The sun just came out of hiding after a day that was forecast to be all rainy, I’m going to a party tonight to say goodbye to a colleague who’s going back to Canada, and I have several little vases of rununculi on my coffee table. I love rununculus season and am looking forward to a constant supply for the next two months; I do like tulips but when there’s not much else available even that can get boring.

As usual, my plans for the weekend are to take lots of pictures, but I guess we all know what can become of plans. Mostly not much. Still… fingers crossed.

Happy Friday & have a good weekend, everyone!

Hello, I’m back among the living. And I feel like I should be welcoming myself back to this blog because it seems so long that I’ve posted properly here. This is my first week back to work after another two weeks of sick leave. I feel like I really should be done with sickness for the rest of the year, I just hope life agrees.

Naturally, I haven’t done much or gone anywhere during the past weeks, and I feel ready to properly start 2017 now. Apart from reading an awful lot these past weeks, the only things I did were  food shopping and trips to the pharmacy once a week. Which also means I didn’t get “proper” flowers during that time, but I did buy supermarket tulips. That’s pretty much all you get at the supermarket right now, and out of boredom I took tulip pictures.

Today I’ll be going to the market again, maybe I’ll find more interesting flowers there; I’ll definitely be stocking up on veg & fruit, I love that it’s currently blood orange season. I try to make the most of it, peeling some every evening to take to work as a snack the next day as well as juicing some to use in salad dressing or mix with buttermilk for a refreshing drink.

If all goes according to plan, I’ll be baking bread; have been meaning to do that ever since the class I took in autumn last year. There are also a couple of other things that have been written on my kitchen chalk board for quite a while, like making caramels, making more macarons, making onion soup… We’ll see what I’ll really feel like making this weekend.

I hope you’ve all managed to stay healthy and have nice plans for the weekend.

Happy Friday!

Good morning. After starting into the new year with a cold and on sick leave, with wanting to climb the walls because of my horrible neighbours and thus feeling physically, mentally and emotionally exhausted, I’m doing my best to feel better.

I’m very actively looking for a new place to rent, having looked at a place earlier this week, and I’ll be looking at another one tomorrow. The problem is that there’s more demand than supply, which means rental prices are really up the roof. Then there’s the fact that you want to move asap but don’t want to take the first place available (and affordable) either just because you want to leave your old place behind. The place I looked at earlier this week was great. On first glance. I’m tempted to go for it because it’s a very quiet place, new, equipped with a beautiful kitchen (major plus for me) but I can’t turn a blind eye to the things that aren’t so great. I feel I get more picky with age, too. We’ll see where it goes.

Amidst all these problems, thoughts, worries and decisions to make, a post on Helen’s 365 Journal popped up in my reader that I immediately loved and am going to internalize:

sound-of-my-feet-helen-boydMy plans for this weekend are maybe trying recipes for the food blog and definitely sorting through all my (too many) possessions. I really want to be prepared for a move, however long it’ll take to find a place, and get rid of unused and unnecessary things and clutter.

I hope your new year has started well for you. Happy Friday!

Good morning. Today’s flowers were on my coffee table two weeks ago. I’ve meanwhile picked this bunch apart, and only a few stems remain. I was really drawn to them right on entering the florist’s because the pink of the carnations was so unbelievably vibrant, a real eye catcher. I know you can’t see that in this photo, because I used a preset on it; I chose this version because to me it reflects a beautiful thing in dreary weather, which unfortunately we’ve been having throughout the week.

Speaking of presets – do you use any at all? Make your own? Download free ones? Buy them?
Until yesterday I had only every used free ones and have made two myself. However, when I see pictures I like, I find it too time-consuming to try and figure out which settings people have used, it’s too much fiddling around with levers in Lightroom, I’m also not exactly familiar with the tone curve, but on the other hand I shied away from buying presets just because I’m too lazy making my own.
Yesterday, though, I bought some because they were 50 % off due to Thanksgiving. They’re beautiful, and I’m looking forward to trying them out.

Wednesday was my second dentist appointment, and I’m happy to report that I didn’t feel anything this time. The sounds during the procedure still weren’t pleasant, and I’ll have to take painkillers for a couple more days, but I’m definitely no longer afraid of the next and hopefully last visit.

This week my car got its winter tyres, so I’m prepared for snow now. Thanksgiving was celebrated in the US yesterday, and I’m invited for a late Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow, which I’m very much looking forward to. Our Stuttgart Christmas market starts next week, and it’s always nicer to go there when it’s actually snowing, so fingers crossed.

I’m hoping to get in a few hours in the kitchen this weekend to make some homemade gifts that need to sit and infuse for a while before they can be given away as Christmas presents.

There’ll be some more photography experiments as well. After I finally managed to disassemble my old tripod to use the ball head with the new 90º coloumn tripod, I realised I hadn’t bought a weight to keep it from toppling over; I’ll be doing that tomorrow, because at the moment I’ve got a little cooler bag filled with bags of rice and flour hanging at the tripod to keep it stable.

What are you up to this weekend?

Happy Friday!

Good morning! Rainy day today, but I don’t mind as I don’t have any plans except visit the market after work.

Today’s flowers are a throwback to summer, when I had them on my coffee table and then unexpectedly received a gift in the mail from my friend E in the US. The card she sent with it nicely fit the colour scheme of my flowers, so I decided to take a picture.

Last week I received my new tripod, not to replace my (not so) old one but to use for different things as it has a 90° column. Only I haven’t been able to use it yet, because I have to unscrew the ball head from the old tripod first, which I haven’t managed to do. Ah, the things you have to postpone because you have to go ask for help…

I’m still planning on doing some photography experiments again this weekend, and also do some recipe experiments. On Sunday I might go to the annual Slow Food show with a friend, but otherwise it’ll be a quiet weekend. This morning I got a call from my dentist to move my next appointment forward to next Wednesday – I’ll be glad when all that is behind me.

Question: I’ll be in the UK first week of December, and will be visiting York for three days. Does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations for breakfast/lunch/afternoon tea places that are nice and where I can go by myself?

Happy Friday!

Another Friday, another weekend ahead of us.

Last week I told you about the food market I was planning to go to with a friend. We were both disappointed. The market was supposed to be about sustainability, especially with regards to food. Both of us expected more than a booth with chickpea chips, jam and honey and another a juice stall. The organic catering company selling lunch did not convince either, the pumpkin soup and the pasta with pumpkin sauce dumped onto it did not look appetising. All in all, this show wasn’t worth the entry fee. Luckily we’d been in the city for breakfast that morning and had a nice day overall.

Since last weekend several unpleasant things have happened. The thing we woke up to on Thursday morning that probably shocked a great part of the world, the weather here turning really ugly bringing us intermittent snow, rainstorms and cold, and then there was my dentist appointment. Like many people, I don’t find going to the dentist pleasant in the first place, but with the outlook of a root canal treatment I was quite panicky. The nice assistant involved me in a conversation about Christmas baking, very likely because she could see the panicked look on my face, and after that I was a little more relaxed, knowing that the likelihood of feeling anything during the procedure was minimised by the anaesthetic. Little did we know that I would feel everything, even after the seventh injection, because the nerve was highly inflamed. I almost cried. And now we have to wait and see if the thing calms down with the help of the medication they put in. So I still have a root canal ahead of me in two weeks’ time.

Enough complaining. I’m looking forward to a quiet weekend, the last one I’ll have to myself before Christmas. I have a few photography things planned, things new to me that I want to try, and I’m looking forward to the delivery of a new tripod tomorrow. I have a travel tripod that I like very much (although I’ve only traveled with it once), but wanted one with a 90° column. I’ve also ordered black foamboard, which seems to be something you can easily purchase in the US by just walking in to a DIY store, but unfortunately not over here. So that’s another thing I want to experiment with.

So quite a bit of stuff to look forward to. I hope you’ve had a better week and a nice weekend ahead. Happy Friday!

Hello on this very sunny but terribly cold November day. The temperature when I left work yesterday was 3ºC, and on opening the curtains this morning I could see there was already frost on the cars.

I hope the sun will also show up this weekend as I’ve got a busy but fun Saturday ahead of me. I’ll be meeting a friend for breakfast in the city, where we’ll also be checking out the market and some shops, then get on our way to a food market in another town.

Today’s flowers were also leftovers from my jubilee bouquet. They didn’t last but a few days after I took that picture. I’ll have to get a fresh bunch at the market tomorrow.

Hope you also have nice plans and nice weather for your weekend.
